Dominic Hanley
Dominic began sailing at the age of six and has raced ever since, in the Plymouth area, on the J/24 circuit and at international regattas.
After leaving school, he completed a Carpenter and Joinery apprenticeship, then moved into sailmaking in 2008 as a trainee at Westaway Sails. He quickly proved himself an accurate, diligent and fast-learning sailmaker. In 2011 he joined Ullman Sails to broaden his experience, then returned to Westaway as Production Manager, leading the sailmaking team from 2012 to 2014.
In January 2015, Dominic and Sean bought Dart Sails and Covers from Simon and Jane Unwin. More recently, he project managed the purchase and full renovation of the business's Brixham premises, its first owned home since 1996, including the fit-out of the new loft and office. Today he splits his time between the office and the loft floor. He oversees every new sail and carries out the alterations and recuts that give clients' existing sails a new lease of life.
Dominic won the Impala Nationals in 2022 aboard Impulsive. He now races his Formula 28, Stitch, and the J/24 WiJit, which he co-owns with friends. At the 2025 J/24 World Championships, WiJit finished 15th overall, 2nd UK boat, the highest-placed boat powered by an independent sailmaker.
Racing has also taken him to Phuket, Kiel, Strangford Loch, Montenegro and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, where he crewed aboard the Swan 62 Coco de Mer, which carries a full suit of Dart Sails. Every one of those regattas comes back to the loft as first-hand knowledge of how sails behave across different boats and conditions.
Outside of work, Dominic enjoys cycling, surfing and walking his dog.
