Sean has been making sails since 1987, when he joined Westaway Sails as a trainee under then Managing Director Simon Unwin. After a spell at Proctor Masts South West, building custom rigs for large multihulls and monohulls, he returned to Westaway in 1993 as Loft Floor Manager.

In 2015 he and Dominic bought Dart Sails & Covers together and has been the loft’s sail designer ever since.

He designs sails for every type of boat that comes through the door, from family cruisers and blue-water passage makers to classic yachts where durability is paramount, as well as race boats that have gone on to win National Championships. With an unrivalled knowledge of sailcloth and construction, Sean can recommend the materials and design approach that best suits each customer’s specific needs.

Sean is also one of the loft’s World Sailing In-House Certification Measurers, adding another level of technical expertise to the design and measurement process.

Away from the loft, Sean has won National and European titles across dinghies, sportsboats and yachts. He is an RYA National Race Officer and has run racing at events up to World Championship level, including the 2025 J/24 World Championship in Plymouth.

Much of Sean’s spare time is now spent supporting his son Thomas, one of the country’s leading young sailors. Thomas won the Topper 4.2 National Championship in 2022 and the ILCA 4 National Championship in 2025, has represented Great Britain at World Championship level, and has now moved up to the ILCA 6 after being selected for the British Sailing Youth Team.
